About midnight the night before, Elise and I decided to tour Philadelphia before leaving the area. In the morning, luggage in tote (though only a small part of it – thanks Russ!) and baby strapped in, we took the train into the city. Russ and Anne spent time the night before figuring out which train stops, tickets, etc. and printed out a google map of historic Philly so I could have some idea of where to go. It was so much fun!!
Elise and I saw so many landmarks of this country’s founding. I must say that after DC and Philly, I am a more patriotic citizen of the United States of America.
Liberty Bell,
Supreme Court Chamber in Old City Hall,
Independence Hall,
original copies of the Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation and the Constitution
Congress Hall
(in our tour guide’s opinion, that is the exact spot where perhaps the most important moment occurred: when George Washington gave up his position as president and passed it off to John Adams),
Campos for an authentic Philly Cheesesteak (topped with cheese whiz and all!) (this place comes highly recommended by all, in case you want an authentic experience),
Elfreth’s Alley
(the Alley is in the background. It is a street lined with houses as they would have been in the 1770’s (on the outside that is). People actually live in them, which would be way cool!) (That is her baby carrier (an Ergo – love it!) and to my defense, it is not digging into her cheek as it appears in this picture.),
and the United States Mint.
Then, it was back onto the train to the airport. No matter where we went, Elise made friends everywhere. She was especially keen on attracting assumed grandparents. It’s her winning smile.
We boarded our flight from Philly to Chicago and were off for another adventure!
